Robert Michael Pyle is the author of fifteen books, including Wintergreen, winner of the John Burroughs Medal; Where Bigfoot Walks, which he researched while on a Guggenheim Fellowship; The Thunder Tree; and The Butterflies of Cascadia. He is also co-editor of Nabokov’s Butterflies. His column “The Tangled Bank” appears in each issue of Orion magazine. Pyle has a Ph.D. in ecogeography from Yale University and lives along a tributary of the Lower Columbia River.
