Wintun Indians, who live in north-central California, have several principal groups speaking related dialects, so variations in the spelling of this term are common. Bally, bolly, or bolla means “high peak” in Wintun, while yola or yallo means “snow” or “snow-covered.” In the Mendocino National Forest, the Yolla Bolly Wilderness takes its name from Wintun and means the wilderness with “snow-covered peaks.”
