collapse sink

surface collapses, or slumps, creating a shallow basin or funnel-shaped depression in the landscape. Size and shape vary; a collapse sink may create a shallow depression of many acres. Like other categories of sinkholes, collapse sinks have numerous synonyms, including collapse doline, shakehole, and swallowhole in the United Kingdom; the more musical polje and ponor of Serbo-Croatian; and cenote, very common in Florida and in Mexico’s Yucatán.
