Estero is Spanish for inlet or estuary—as in the Estero Bay areas of Lee County, Florida, and San Luis Obispo County, California. In south Texas and parts of Mexico the word is used to describe bottomland or those segments of an arroyo that remain filled with water after the rainy season. These esteros hold water for only a short time after a heavy rainfall. In Taos County, New Mexico, the term is applied to a swampy area called Los Esteros.
