weathering pit

A depression on a flat surface in rocky terrain, varying in shape and ranging in size from a few inches to several yards in width, is known as a weathering pit. As the name suggests, weathering and erosion enlarge these pits, which are a common feature of granite terrain. They are found in many parts of the Southwest, including sites at Glen Canyon on the Colorado River and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area in Texas. A giant sandstone pit can be found near Red Breaks, Utah.
